Legg to restore 101 S. Harrison Street

Caleb Legg, the owner of this building at 101 S. Harrison Street, holds up a photo of what it looked like circa 1900. Legg is restoring the building so that its exterior looks like it did at that time, with arched windows and brick walls. Legg plans to move his antique galleries and restoration business into the building when it’s completed.

For Caleb Legg, the three-year, quarter-of-a-million-dollar, complete restoration of 101 S. Harrison Street is just a retirement project.

More commonly known as the Hub building, it’s housed a general store, confectioner’s supply, shoe store, and realtor’s office since it was built in the 1800s.

“It’s a grand old building, it needs to be saved, and unless somebody steps to the challenge, it’s going to continue to look poor,” he said. “We’re going to do everything we can to make it contribute to the main street and all the work going on down here in Shelbyville. It will be a nice compliment to get this corner solidified. That’s my goal.”
